I very much disagree with the padfone failure. At the time it was very hard to find a tablet with decent hardware. Most tablets had a very inferior chipset when compared to flagship phones, and the price didn't reflect that. The padfone was a great phone, with a great tablet docking station that genuinely turned it into a good tablet with excellent battery life (the Dock had it's own battery). Its biggest problem was the price. At more than 1k usd at launch it wasn't exactly affordable. Hence many dismissed it for a cheaper Samsung phone and tablet. I still have one sitting on my desk though.

than you're probably the consumer looking for a device that can be a tablet and phone in one. when you make a device like this you are looking for the consumers who want only a tablet that can turn into a phone and vise versa

      ShinyNerd 8 महीने पहले +3

Honestly, i love my Note 20 Ultra, but i miss my padfone. anything like youtube or netflix on a bigger sceen was amazing. And the tablet had its own battery. so you could use it as a charger if needed. sure there were a few issues with it, like not being able to take the pad everywhere like you could the phone. But it was a solid phone.

We definitely need more of this series, your missing some big stories like antennagate (which was actually caused by apples own paranoia since they wouldn't allow testers to touch the phone and shipped it in a case that they had to set up in their car and drive around town only able to use the screen and not pickup the phone) or webOS and the fall of palm that had a 25% market share in 2006 to 0 today (but lg uses webOS on their TVs now) even though they had actual full app multitasking before Android and wireless charging way back in 2010

  • Dan Gerszewski

Your analysis of why "two in one" devices fails was really insightful, because as someone that follows tech and gadgets they always SOUND good, and people keep trying and they just never land well. With tablet-phones I think you hit all the reasons the combined devices are never quite what people want-- you compromise too much phone to make it also a tablet and too much tablet to make it also a phone. The core idea seems to misunderstand what the appeal of a tablet is: if the appeal was just a 26cm display was the major selling point then it might be the ticket-- but the existence of 17.75cm tablets and 17cm phones show that's not really the case. The added processor power is the major selling point, along with the increased battery, often more memory and the screen size.

I think the phone should be itself and the tablet should be marketed as an accessory.
It would be a feature rather than the device itself. Like Samsung DeX

i bought an Asus Padfnne 2 from a thrift a thrift store for $9 -to repurpose as an FPV controller. here's my takeL The phone has all tje top of the line features you could pack into one in 2012, GSM, NFC,Bluetooth, wifi, gps fm radio 13 mpixel camera with mechanical zoom
The tablet acts like adock ro to extend battery life , and provides a 10 " displsy.
The taglet dock was hwvy, and cost asmuch as a tablent when sold serperately , so it seemed a eat idea, it simply didn't have a market

When suddenly between 11:48 to 11:49, that RED character from Among Us just caught all of my attention and I quickly thought of there would be an emergency meeting of all phone companies Arun have reviewed about.. 🤣🤣🤣 Then I rewinded a couple of seconds to realize that was done to relate to the word "sus". Better analogy for the Vulk one phone would be actually similar to a mesh network especially the ones used by electric utilitys for smart meters. Every so often on the utility poles there is a little box with an antenna and each meter contains both a transmitter and a receiver so that way they don’t have to put the base stations on every pole but can still have reliable connections even in large developments or in areas that don’t have above ground utilities

@Beat E. Schaub "the Note 7 was actually not that bad" The phone or the disaster? The phone looked very modern and sleek at the time. The disaster was PRETTY BAD. If you're calling it 'not that bad' then you don't know what you're talking about. It forced Samsung go full-damage control mode they had to refund or replace every Note 7, lost the trust of many customers and potential future customers, and bled billions from them.

17:00 I used to LOVE my Sony Ericsson T68 back in the day. What's mad to think is that, before Apple came along and turned the mobile phone industry upside down, Sony Ericsson were up there competing with the best phone companies around, like Nokia & Motorola, and Sony Ericsson were the company to first produce a decent mobile phone with a colour screen - the aforementioned mighty T68, what a phone! (I know there were a couple that came before, like the Siemens, but the Sony Ericcson's actually sold). That's crazy to think that the company who lead the way in bringing us colour screens in the first place, a company connected with Sony who make some of the best screens and computers around, are the company who fell apart upon the switch to smartphones. You would think that, out of Sony, Nokia and Motorola it would be Sony that would transition to smartphones the easiest but, in the end, they went down first.

17:55 "An aging operating system with no apps called Symbian." ... WHAT?!
Aging, sure, but by that year Symbian literally had the biggest gallery of programs you could run on a mobile OS, by far! It's also about the second or third best OS for tinkerers. That quote was extremely out of touch, you immediately lost me there.
Symbian still has functionality that today's phones haven't got yet, and many of the things Android became famous for were already possible with Symbian way way long before Android's existence, which, contrary to today, at the time were actually impressive feats for mobile hardware and software.

The 50-euro Doogee X10 I bought in 2017, obvously not expecting much, gave as much as I expected. Slow slow slow. But that wasn't a problem as I basically bought it just for phoning.
The real problem was it had ADWARE BAKED INTO THE ROM. Ads would pop up randomly, at any time, even while trying to dial a number. I think that's worth a solid 10/10!

Buying a phone solely for its camera features is something, I will never understand.
    Your videos are surprisingly entertaining.
My only suggestion is: why not add stories, how manufacturers learnt their lession, later on, with fixed revisions and newer products or campaigns?
On the other hand: Especially Sony is a company that always wanted to participate in many areas (e.g. building devices with rivalling platforms like PalmOS and Symbian at the same time, but failing to really push any one them forward, and on the other hand: trying to force people to their own technical standard like the MemoryStick, far beyond the moment of market fail) - so, this single top-potential company gives enough material for a whole episode of ambivalent success, where Microsoft delivers a pretty straight range of ... failure, if not pushed into the market using unbelievable cross-subsidiation.

Loved when everyone else wasted their money on the Samsung juke or chocolate 3 and were MEGA jealous when I waited and bought the enV2 a few months later. 5:56 "they had a built-in DAC for lossless audio files"
That's not how it works at all. Every phone has a dac and an amp inside of it to run the speakers. Audio files are just compressed data which is uncompressed by the cpu and then sent to the dac, what formats your computer can play isn't dependent on your dac, but on whether you have a program that can decompress the data.

Shady benchmarking has been around forever. I'm glad he pointed out that they should be taken with a grain of salt.
Years ago there was a benchmark company that was making a free benchmark software that the company making the software was making too much money than what would be made from free. It turned into a tech-controversy that they would take money to pad results from hardware manufactures who "donated" money to them. This racket was further supported by magazine companies who would also publish benchmarks by the same software who also happened to be major advertisers to the magazine.
The gamer scene mostly ignored the controversy. After all this was the piece of software that was justifying their extreme price purchases to all their friends. To accept the numbers given were false would be to accept that they were fooled.
I started to unravel this sham when I was working on a super high-end graphic workstation that had a VERY expensive 3DLabs OpenGL card (this was built for a business) and benched it with a "suggested" mid-grade gamer card doing OpenGL in the benchmark software. I knew right away this was all a lie when the off-the-shelf gamer card scored higher than the OpenGL card that costed more than the entire computer with the game card. Performance in games like Quake and HalfLife were mind blowing... in the benchmark software it would chug out dismal FPS. I tried to tell people and warn people but it was clearly not something they wanted to hear. They wanted to believe in the lie.
Anyways, the company involved with the software has cleaned up and changed their business model... and the magazine publishers involved are long since went bankrupt. Else I would be name dropping.
Moral of the Story: Absolutely NO ONE should believe benchmarks and marketing over their own two eyes. Thank you @Mrwhosetheboss for sharing yet another scam involving benchmark software and informing people of the vulnerability of putting too much trust in it.

Too bad what happened to Doogee. My smartphone broke a few years ago (2015/2016), and as a student I had hardly any money. My friend gave me a Doogee, I do not remember which model, X5S probably. I was really happy about it - The display resolution was quite low, and it was quite heavy, but had super mobile reception, the battery lasted easily two days and the camera was usable. Two months later I was walking on a dark path with cobblestones, stumbled, and it fell out of my jacket pocket. It became my only smartphone until today that I destroyed out of carelessness.

That chip with the benchmark cheating is hilarious. I 100% agree that it's lol the car emissions cheating - deceiving the public in every way so that your product doesn't look like a piece of junk compared to your competitors. Only difference is the emissions stuff is horrible for the environment and air pollution, but bad tech can leave a huge footprint in our environment as well! Especially if that tech cannot be/is not recycled responsibly.

Well, to be fair, the Galaxy Camera was never meant to be a phone, I think it was more meant to be a camera running on Android OS to take photos and post them on social media, but it loses out when people already have a phone with great camera. So I wouldn’t say the Galaxy Camera failed because it wasn’t a phone, rather it failed because there are already phones holding it down.

Tbh i thought the lg wing is neat!
Since i remember a way order version before that other dual screen system, in the first iron man movie wich was neat and through the wing i found also out what it was called and that it was shapen a little bit different because the real thing was wider and lower..

    • Darth Kai

I got a Wing off Amazon for 300 bucks about 2 weeks ago. Even less after I threw a 50 dollar gift card and some rewards points on it, so actually about 225 dollars. I am loving it. Just nice to have fun with a phone again. But yeah, they are going cheap right now!
And it's definitely a head-turner at the office!

Oh doogee also makes tough phones, though i love the concept out of the 2 i used from ulefone they were a bit better in battery but the fact that samsung made the galaxy xcover pro kinda useless because non of the ip68 phones had a replacable battery, if you tried you'd loose the waterproofness and it wrecks the screen thus i felt that the ulefone armor 5 and 5s were basicly phones you'd use for a year and throw away because of the battery..
Samsung had for the record in the xcover pro a classic thing in that the back is removable and the battery can be replaced just as easy as the old ones without the loss of protection, the only downsides are the very low power battery and that it doesn't have 5g internet..
