The iSmell is still a good idea in my head. Just not for consumers. They had the right idea for cinemas, but now with immersive technology like VR, escape rooms, theme parks it really would've added an extra layer.

In my head this goes so well with commercials if it can be embedded into an average tv/ laptop-imagine a KFC/ ubereats ad with that tasty smell, car ad with the smell of the car, luxury item ads with smell of perfume. That would have been amazing and def would have been more tempting

Funnily enough, the Kinect is now somewhat desirable for people getting into VR, because it can give you full body tracking for cheap and with less hassle than setting up, charging, and putting on trackers, especially if your headset didn't need/come with the base stations needed for tracking

for comparison in France we got the app "tous anti-covid" (everyone against covid) that was launched because of the pandemic and it apparently costed 7 million to develop and publicise (they spent more on marketing than on the app development) and it would use bluetooth to detect when you passed by other people and notify people if you declared yourself positive, it also serves as the support for the electronic version of the "sanitary pass" which was required for a lot of stuff

That iSmell seems like a great idea to me. Being able to pump smells out while playing a VR game, for example, would seriously add to the Immersion. The smell of burning or gun powder for a war game, or the smell of flowers for one of those calming VR experiences, or literally anything else. How the hell did this idea not take off? Even if you had to sell specific 'smell packs' to use for each particular game or app. I would buy those up in minute.

3:28 honestly, this applies to every single Windows iteration after Windows 7. It's progressively got more blocky and child friendly while simultaneously hiding and making features infinitely harder to find. To the point that even when you know where everything is, it STILL takes more clicks and more time than it would in the previous windows version.

I remember when you rented video cassettes from the corner market - not Redbox, literally asked the cashier if they had Star Wars for rent (they would have three copies) and you rented them for a dollar a day up to three days. You could even choose between VHS and Beta. Only years later was when Blockbuster came along, and Netflix was a mail-in rental.

The Kinect listening in on you in your own home whilst playing your video games must be THE solemn worst case of digital home invasion and breaking into people's privacy I EVER heard of. That THAT did not set off much more of a storm of protest and lead to some consequences is something that has surprised mea great deal. That being said, I am curious if the Kinect's (superior) ability to pick up on all the physical moves its players made with all of their bodies during gameplay is something that since has been implemented into other game consoles, would anybody know that?

It cost £35mil, people that can’t be bothered to look at facts think that the cost of testing was also spent on the app, also if people bothered to research further the 37bn was allocated for TEST and trace not actually spent. Never mind, facts aren’t relevant nowadays.

@Glenn Reviews It's clear they didn't get skilled or even competent staff. The staff were certainly skilled at negotiating rates like that.
I do know that at that level, you are owned and can expect legal action for any shortcomings (unless you can settle out of court, and good luck with that). In my own work, I'm obliged to have legal protection insurance for that very reason.
Why aren't these people being sued?

    • Glenn Reviews

the psvita fail i agree with so much. as a psvita owner myself, it had so much potential, filled to the brim with awesome games that make sure you never feel bored of the game, and features that anyone couldve asked for in a portable console during its tims.
however, because of sony's bad decisions, whatever they were thinling, it just screwed the thing over. bad pricing, proprietary accessories (thankfully fixed with the psvita 2000 slim models, which had 1gb of inbuilt storage and a micro usb charger), and what not.
the psvita couldve lived up to its name, forgive the pun, Vita, but instead it became Mortem.

I live in CA where they do a pretty good job at banning cigarettes by making them so expensive - a pack of Marlboros are easily $12-15 a pack whereas in my hometown in Indiana- only $6-7.

This seems like a great idea! But, it should be used for games and stuff rather than to aromatize your home, imagine the immersion in a game if you could smell the ambient, like gta, when entering a store smelling the inside, or entering your brand new car to smell the it, or an explosion! So much possibilities, I always wanted a product like this!

Honestly, I was expecting something on the list that wasn't there, could have been a 2 out of 10 but..
Well you could add the Microsoft buying minecraft business, it was all fine, every player got capes, it seemed to have a positive outcome.... at first.
After the release of minecraft version 1.19, minecraft, or we should rather say microsoft introduced a player reporting system
And believe me when I say this, it caused A LOT of clashback, see the thing is that it basically told every player that we don't trust the server owners to do the moderation, or they are not capable enough so we are going to do it ourselves, and this system, it can be abused
It can be used to falsely report player, ban them from playing multiplayer for years on the end, and the only option that is left with them after that is to either play singleplayer or just buy a new account altogether....
This has caused a lot of critisization against microsoft and the playerbase is refusing to update their servers to version 1.19
So well I guess it could have very well been on the list

as a software developer myself I can absolutely guarantee no developer EVER would use MS Excel as the single source of truth data store for ANY app. Its super simple to use MySQL or any other database solution that comes with everything needed and simple interfaces and usage guides.
The only way this could have cost so much and been using MS Excel is if done intentionally, where the developers were given Excel as a backend as a criteria/constraint for the development.

On clip (14) about the use of 3D glasses. This concept only works if you have perfect vision... As with me having a left eye squint, when JAWS-3D came to our Tv's in the 80's, all I could see was a separate (Red & Blue) lens, and, while the rest of the family all hid behind the sofa in panic mode. I just threw mine in the trash, and sat there bored at the sight of a blurry image emitting a revolving mess on the exterior of what was suppose to resemble a figure coming out of the screen... 😒 At least having split vision, I can no read two pages at once... (myth) ~ The atuel disability was that it slowed me down in school time, (hence) I had to stand in the corner of the class, for NOT being able to keep up my English? (no good whatsoever)

the worst part of onlive's demise was not that it had a startup with big dreams mentality... it was more that sony bought and killed it off to make it's own, ecosystem-locked version.

@L C Yup! This is exactly what happened. Netflix tried to sell itself to Blockbuster for $50 million in 2000. At the time it wasn't streaming, just mail-order dvds, so you can kind of see why BB thought it wasn't worth it, since they had no shortage of shops and business was booming, why would they spend $50million on something that was really just tacked on the side of their business? I suspect if they'd actually bought it and kept the model going, we wouldn't have had netflix as a streaming service at all, since BB just never grasped that's how the industry was going (weird since music had already gone that way...)

I happened to like Windows Vista Ultimate.
    I had no compatibility issues.
I could stop it from EVER trying to update or even look for updates (GD I miss that feature!).
PC ran quiet and wasn't heating up or struggling to run a bunch of crap in the background like windows 10 does.
Dreamscene... I know there's replacement apps for it now, but I loved running that! In short, it was a program that allowed you to use animated images or video as well as interactive stuff as your desktop background.
Not having to emulate DOS. Had several older games that simply won't work on anything past Windows Vista Ultimate without using an emulator. They worked fine on Vista though.

And yes, Bob does run on Win 95/98 but by the time Windows 95 launched, Bob was almost already discontinued.

It will be a part of real vr experiences. It has to be.
Smell is incredibly important to an experience.
Its linked to memories. Like how a smell can bring you back in time to a specific memory
Mimicking musty air inside a building, then opening the door to outside with bright sun and the smell of fresh cut grass or leaves ect. Would really add to the realism..
the slight smell of rotting meat as zombies pass. Or entering an infested building. The smell needs to be part of the experience.
Even something simple like, eating some candy bar for health, "emitting sweet chocolate smell". Taste and smell are closely linked .
      Really would feel real.
Then how about the smell of copper / iron ?
      When bleeding out or died.

Kinda sad about the 3D tv segment. I still have (and use) a Sony 3D tv with my PS3 as the 3D Bluray player. I get super deals on 3D bluray films now (when available). It was a gimmick that most didn't care for though. Oh well, here's to hoping that my 3D tv never dies!!!

I personally very much enjoyed the Avengers game. I can see why people don't like it, but I thought the story was interesting. The one thing I disagree on is the part that said you fight enemies in the same spot over and over. In the game even though you are fighting the same people you do fight in a lot of different areas with different landscapes. The fact that the characters don't look the same as the actors in the movie shouldn't be a reason to not like a game. You can have your own opinion, but me personally I loved the game, and I don't understand why it got so much hate. The IP thing was bad, but it got fixed and the game is actually fun.

Well the Norwegian track app(1.version) for covid was ranked as one of the worst for user privacy and was in the same score area as countries we don't like to be associated with in the western rich I countries. But U.K wasn't the only one who burnt themselves on the tracking / tracing app for C-19. The 1.version of the tracking app was removed because of the privacy thing and many people didn't trust the 2.version after that(me included) and the government was repeatably trying to get their citizens to install it. The population was fool me once, but many still installed it.

PS Vita is such an amazing handheld. I swear Sony tried to kill it intentionally with their ridiculous proprietary SD cards and the Vita game library was quite limited unless you are a fan of JRPGs.
At least it's been hacked so that you can use normal microSD cards in it now and run tons of emulators on it, it's an absolutely amazing system when it's jailbroken. Definitely my favorite handheld system of all time

If they had put in regular Micro SD from the start I imagine it would have actually been successful. Not like Original Game Boy, but remember around that time the 3DS was still selling well despite being far less powerful than the Vita. Obviously Nintendo platforms sell mostly based on their IP, which Sony isn't even close to, but they could have done good business. They just shot themselves in the foot out of greed or a fear of people pirating games on it (which would have happened anyway)

You're absolutely right, Sony released much too little games on it compared to something like the 3DS.
But the hacking community is really amazing, I played GTA: SA on the Vita a few days ago and it felt amazing. You can't really run something like that so smoothly on any other handheld device (besides the pretty high-end smartphones)! Amazing for a console that you can get for under $150, sometimes even $100.

Was great for Niche JRPGs, if you're hardcore JRPG fan you were getting it for stuff like Atelier, Ys and Trails of Cold Steel but the average guy didn't know what was on it. Thing also plays PS1 and PSP games. so you got a bunch of JRPGs from those 2 systems. Since X/X2 was ported to Vita, basically every Final Fantasy game except for 12 is playable on it. Problem is, you couldn't fit it all without spending $100 of a 64gb sd card.

What is interesting about Kinect was that it is now being used for monuments and art displays in several countries. In fact, there was one in Singapore at the airport where they would track your face and aline your face with the white paper in front of you. This was all done with the Kinect itself!

As a huge PSVita enjoyer (still using it to this day thanks to SD2Vita and CFW), I definitely think the memory card issue had a lot to do with why it bombed. Better integration with their consoles and a standard SD card, they may have had an almost Switch-like experience and been far more accessible/appealing. Pretty sure the Switch would have still been a smash hit even if the Vita succeeded, but maybe Sony could have gotten a piece of the pie instead of just crumbs and failure...

    • Andrew

Sony is too obsessed with nickel and diming their customers to allow people to use an SD card. They pushed those stupid Memory Stick Duo cards for SO damn long.

I got the PSTV. The annoying thing with that is that a lot of Vita games won't work on it (unless you hack it) because it lacks the touchscreen/touchpad. Developers were encouraged to use touch inputs apparently. The most frustrating is Wipeout 2048 because the only touchscreen bit is the menus.

@AUSTIN The ps vita costed a LOT for sony to make when they added the OLED screen, and in turn they added proprietary memory cards to make up in costs,it was a serious gamble because they did this on the first model without knowing if the system would take off,I agree that it looks amazing, and also I don't neccesarily think the vita is dead, the homebrew community has given it amazing support, also can you chill the fuck out?jesus.

Netflix might have helped push Blockbuster to the edge, but there's more to that story.
Simply put, it was movie distributors that killed the rental video industry.
A large percentage of Blockbuster's rentals were in VHS, not DVDs. In 2008, distributors stopped making them. Full stop.
This literally cut the legs out from under stores like Blockbuster. Netflix streaming finished them off.

Another thing that happened with the Kinect: Microsoft massively nerfed the retail product after initial reveals. The device didn't have the capabilities they initially advertised and promoted. If it worked as well as it initially did, it may have been a literal game-changer for not just games, but as an input.
