Almost 2 years have passed since the release of this video. I still wait for the moment when Samsung will indeed be releasing a complete version of this concept.
It might not go as well as we expect, but I wouldn't think it will be a failure.
Samsung is bringing technology to a new level, not only by working on this but also thinking about the foldable phone. You might argue it wasn't successful, but it was a big step (maybe not the absolute first) in the future.
It's admirable that they are trying new things and not only using all their resources to develop as much as possible things that are guaranteed to be profitable.

Using some common sense and practicality, it's obvious that a transparent phone/TV is a terrible idea. Bringing in new technology is great, but there needs to be a use-case for people to use it.

The issue with augemented reality is that you need to take perspective into account. If the thing on the screen is only based on the phone's position and rotation, it will look equally funky and even less convincing.

To me transparent screens are futuristic because in movies they usually value a cool form over function. Irl even if it was possible it would be annoying because it would be harder to see the screen details with no background and people could spy on your phone by just looking at you from the front.

I value immersion but on my desktop, tv or in VR.
A phone seems like a good place to have transparency, something for notifications without being too distracting from your environment and reduces distractions in social dynamics, while still being a more flexible form factor than a smart watch. Glasses fall into that problem again, being too easily accessible to not be a distraction.

There's such an issue with cracked screens now, imagine how fragile this one would be. And why have a transparent phone if you have to put it in a big heavy duty smart phone protector? They'd have to come up with some major material upgrades. There always seems to be such a real gap between what developers design and promise, vs. how items work in the real world. I know people keep promoting Augmented Reality but yet to see it really pay out in any real way. The glasses seem to make more sense.

Transparency would be a great feature for WORK (Presentations, 3D Models, Engineering, Data Modeling, Biologic Research, etc). Also transparency can be VERY COOL if the background can be blurry (something that actually would be not hard to do). So for home traditional usage IS NOT a great idea, but for the examples I gave and more, yes.
Many times, when you want to show something on screen, the viewers can not see the things because of the angles, but with a double perspective (viewers in front and behind your laptop) it should be and can be quite useful.

A transparent phone won’t make people more aware of their surroundings . A normal phone doesn’t take up a significant % of your vision. Rather the focus point is 2ft away. That won’t change when looking at a transparent phone.
In fact it would probably require more concentration on the screen to discern it from the distracting background.

Just one remark - the first concepts of transparent phone where made by Samsung somewhere around 2007. Back then Firefox where planning to create their own phone, with build-in projector. The concept where not just transparent phone, but also a foldable one. The idea was you would wear it like bracelet or clock on your hand, and in case you need to make call it would easily be unfolded back into phone. 15 years latter and look at the time - we are almost there. Samsung does have foldable screen tech, they will get transparent screen tech, and the last step - combine the two.

It would certainly be an exciting way to break away from the "candy bar" design, without actually breaking away from it lol. There's nothing wrong with the form factor (and I'm not sold that foldable smartphones will become the dominate smartphone, still feels niche to me), but it's boring, and has been around for a long time now. But it will still be important for this design to still compete with conventional candy bar/slab phones, performance and feature-wise. Most buyers won't be willing to sacrifice a bunch of features or performance just to have a see-through phone.

The only case I can see for it: it's gimmicky and phone manufacturers love gimmicks, regardless of what the average consumer thinks about it. AR is a fair usecase, but it's something that still very underutilized even in its current implementation.
Also, I don't see it ever getting implemented fully. Getting a screen to be transparent is a much simpler problem than getting every component in it to be transparent, that might simply not become possible in the next couple of decades or even ever. The obvious solution is pushing those components to one side, but that requires much smaller batteries at the very least. Personally I would be more excited about such improvements to batteries with many usecases than a transparent screen

I think what we can see from tech manufacturers successes and failures over the past decade the that software is really going to lead the hardware. By the time a transparent device comes to fruition, whatever apps that would make such a thing useful needs to have already been developed to maturity and really make such an experience at least a little immersive or useful rather than a gimmick

The lifespan of a transparent phone depends on it being accidentally sat on, dropped, spilled on, or unintentionally crushed by user's hand or body. All because it is transparent. This design is mostly aesthetics and will appeal to Apple fans. I don't see many AR games being made specifically for a transparent phone. Whether it will be popular? I think artistic users will be drawn to it. Other users? Big question mark.

The problem with glasses that work with transparent displays is that you can't focus on an object that close to your face. It's why VR headsets have massive lenses. They need to focus the display as if it were much farther from your face. The only way we could currently build smart glasses that appear to have standard lenses is with complicated and extremely precise wave guides to control where the photons get sent onto your eye. There are companies doing this but current tech is prohibitively expensive for the average consumer. Although the price is coming down and companies like Virtuix are coming out with some pretty compelling offerings.

well sure those things may or may not be there but the best design for an invisible whole to be a cylinder with a glass that can roll back into the cylinder, so that the cylinder can have a headphone jack+ a charging port, but there can be alternative such as wireless charging and bluetooth headphones.

Having a transparent phone is the same as using your camera. There are apps and backgrounds that allow any user to make their phone quasi-transparent. Have the camera on all the time, making those images your wallpaper in real time.

wouldn't be impossible to make one. after all, components could be smaller or transparent as well but like imagine cracking this thing. wouldn't be a problem with weight tho cause it'd be very lightweight so dropping it wouldn't make it too fragile. but its more to take in account

I don't think transparency will be the whole screen of the phone, but a part for sure, but it will widely be used in malls, public places more often in the future to show ads and announcements. probably in vehicles like windscreens.

Having it available in a technology as simple as a phone allows for more public availability. Therefore can be experimented on, so the technology can exponentially get better. Who knows, car windows/windscreens can be replaced with it, you can have transparent satnav displayed on it, or entertainment when paired with more accurate self driving etc etc. The possibilities are endless

I don’t see the point in a transparent phone when companies could easily achieve the same effect using the phone’s camera to turn an existing phone transparent. It feels like it wouldn’t take much work to develop a system like thst
