@Ian that’s great, if you have thousands to burn. I do not have that money. PlayStation has never let me down and I’ve never wanted to play a game on a PC. I’m also not interested in retro games and I enjoy playing with the resolution I have now. I don’t feel I need 8k quality and 9999 components to enjoy a simple game..

Correction: PS3 was the first PlayStation console to let you turn it on with the controller, not PS4-I know cuz I still have one & use it 😅 But I think it’s only the newer model/variation that came out after the original release (the Slim version)
Otherwise FANTASTIC video 👍🏼 Great analysis

There are several discrepancies throughout the video of when features were first introduced or things that really should have been mentioned. For example, Dualshock was first introduced on the original Playstation, even if not at launch but still not the PS2 like he leads you to believe. He talks about Sony seeing an opportunity to make a console instead of what was essentially Sony declaring and going to war against Nintendo after the latter pulled out of a business deal on co-development of an add-on for the SNES when Sony had already completed the work and went on to work with Sony's direct competitor at the time. There are quite a few things I'd imagine other Sony savants also already know so I won't go on but it's kind of a shame Arin didn't cover them or at least check what he got wrong.

as a fun fact, there are different ps2 startups: when you have a memory card in and there is no storage, the startup will look like this in 4:00 , however, when there is some space, that will be shown by the blocks (towers?) and the more of those are on the startup, the more space you have. nice detail

Maaan, watching this takes me back. It's sad how Sega practically ruined their run in this race with the release of the dreamcast.. Dreamcast was, in my opinion, so far ahead of it's time it bankrupt the company due to them making far too many consoles than demand due to online gaming not really being in the hands of the average consumer. /:

Awesome video. Have been a PS and GT aficionado since v1, respectively. Still crazy that the PlayStation pretty much came to life b/c Nintendo ditched a co-development with Sony. What is really impressive with each console generation since the PS2 is the improvement in game fidelity within the lifespan of the console. Games like _God of War_ or _Black_ , released just before the PS3 arrived, looked so incredibly good for a machine with a 300 MHz CPU. A huge boon with the PS2 was that it was the cheapest DVD player on the market at launch.
Btw. max PS1 res was 480i, not 480p. As in interlaced :)

Something you didn't mention about the PS3, the reason it launched with such a high price tag was they had physically integrated a PS2 inside of the system so it had the ability to play PS1, PS2, and PS3 games natively with hardware (not through software emulation)
This allowed for full backwards compatibility for all of their titles but drastically increased the manufacturing costs
As they released different Iterations of the Fat PS3 they slowly removed these features until it was strictly subpar software emulation
People like to say they want backwards compatibility but if they really did they would have to pay for it, and history shows people don't want to pay for it...

    • Bzake

12:31 Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I remember correctly, GT6 on the PS3 also had dynamic weather options in which you could change the time of day, how wet the road is and how fast time can move (From 1x to 60x) as well.
I remember racing at the Nurburgring with dynamic weather turned on and time speed to 60x so I could start the race in a sunny environment and deal with darkness and heavy rain before the end of the race.

Sony actually upgraded the controller on the PS1 first with the 2nd version bringing the Joysticks and that was what I had in my PS1...
Also PS2 wasn't still much prepared for LCD, was still much better on a CRT, PS3 and HDMI was the biggest change for LCD. And the latest GT6 for the PS3 was like 1440x1080 and looked pretty damn good.
Also GT7 doesn't have Ray Tracing, you were showing just fake lighting cause it's only available in the game menus and game replays as far as I'm aware and HDR was also already pretty old at that point with many people using it with HDR capable TV's on the PS4 and specially PS4 Pro...

I heard as well that apparently an important part of what seemed to aid Sony with PS2 sales was the fact that it cost a very similar amount (or sometimes even less) than a DVD player whilst being able to play DVDs, so people were buying the console instead of the standalone DVD player.

Sony entering the market with their own system was actually due to a backstab from Nintendo. Sony intended to enter the market with the Nintendo Playstation, where Sony proveded the CD drive part of the system and create exclusive games for it. DEV kits were already available and some prototypes still exist.
The project was basically finished when Nintendo pulled the plug, thinking cds were inferior to cartridges, and developed their side of the system into the Nintendo 64.
Sony had put so much funds into already that they decided to also complete the system and compete with Nintendo with their disc based 3d game console.
It is hard to say who won. Both created an entire own side of the gaming market that grew alongside eachother and coexist without either side losing sales when the other does well, or gains from it the other falters.
There WAS a big loser though: Sega was completely pushed out of the market is just a decade, now reduced to a 2nd party dev studio for mainly Nintendo.

@Games by JH technically the Xbox is more powerful. The difference is some other smaller things. But when it comes to GPU performance the Xbox is better and has been showing it in some recent releases. Of course these consoles are closer together than any other console generation between Sony and Microsoft. No longer is there a noticeable difference between the Xbox and PlayStation since image quality ends up being so similar. In the 6th generation the Xbox clearly was the superior console hardware wise in just about every multi platform game. In the 7th generation the PS3 lost a lot early and mid way through due to the difficulty in programming it. During the 8th generation Xbox was pretty clearly behind, especially early on where you had cases like the battlefield 4 being 1080p on PS4 and 720p on Xbox one. This gen it’s so small I doubt most people could tell which is which even if they were side by side

It still feels nostalgic to have never owned a single Play Station nor played on one but kept watching the PS releases and Games trailor/ Gameplays to feel nostalgic about it. We didn't had that kind of money so I never asked my father for it . Seeing a PlayStation still triggers that strong childhood feeling of wanting to own one. I literally knew every feature without touching one. All I had was internet. I am a 90s kid, so I have seen it all, every release.

Just a note on the PS1. It was also a middle finger to Nintendo whom had backed out of a deal with Sony for a disc add-on for the SNES. To add salt to injury Nintendo then backed one of Sony's rivals.
So they basically took the tech they already developed and released the PS1.

The worst part (for Nintendo) was that rejecting Sony IMMEDIATELY backfired. They would negotiate a deal with Phillips to create a new console, the Cd-i. But this console included some of the WORST games in history (like Hotel Mario and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon). So the PS1 released with discs in 1994, while Nintendo would release the Nintendo 64 in 1996 with cartridges. This meant PS1 games had more storage and games like Final Fantasy VII never made it to the N64. Fast forward to the present. The Switch (released in 2017) has 32GB of storage, while its enhanced OLED Model had 64GB of storage. That is smaller than the PS3 released in 2006! In short, Nintendo backing Phillips lead to them no longer topping the videogame industry, with the Wii being the only Nintendo console to outsell its Sony rival (the PS3).

@SuPa SnEaK Game Boy 118 million, Wii 102 million, Nintendo DS 155 million, so they've all done 100 million systems, Nintendo did it first with Game Boy, then Sony a couple times, then Nintendo a couple times, so both have reached the 100 million mark repeatedly.

partially true, but the add-on wasn't as powerful as the PS1 became. They did add some of their Sony power to it to make it more powerful than would have been had the SNES been using it.

@Dean Does Mapping you give too little credit to how much better hardware has gotten. The thing is games are super scalable now and just run better on a wider variety of hardware. The difference is that rasterization is reaching a limit in fidelity plus the fact is that the effects are already really good. The PS4 is a huge leap over the PS3 in just about every way except for CPU. Games during the 7th generation were mostly baked effects meaning they were not running in real time. Yes the 7th generation was the first to establish most of the real time effects we see in the 8th generation and onward but they were often used sparsely or were not combined in use. The 8th generation changed this by not only being able to use all of these effects at once but also being a lot do it at much high resolutions and levels of accuracy. The PS4 is a bigger jump from the PS3 than what most people give it credit for

    Some additional points:
_PS2_ - Was also a functional DVD player. DVD players were still sort of new at that point, having come out a few years prior. So the fact that the PS2 could also play DVDs was a useful feature. It worked fine with a controller, but you could buy an optional remote accessory.
_PS3 & PS4_ (since there is a lot of crossover points) - Mentioned the Blu-ray compatibility, but there actually was a lot of demand for the PS3 in the early days as a relatively cost-effective Blu-ray player (again, remote as an optional accessory) that could also double as a gaming console. It was a better deal than some of the cheaper early BD players that lacked some key features (I think internet features was a big one, internal storage was another, as that was used for some BD Live functionality). You touched on it with the PS4 bit, but it really was a bit of a nightmare to develop for, as I understand it. Because of this, a lot of games released on it performed worse than their X-Box 360 counterparts, in spite of the console being technically more capable. Skyrim was a notable example. That was pretty infamous for turning into a slideshow after some hours of play on a given character. Also, being a bit pedantic, but the PS3 technically supported up to 1080p gaming. It's just most of the games weren't capable of it, or defaulted to lower resolutions for performance reasons, and I'm pretty sure a fair few games on the PS4 were also sub-1080p render resolution. You can turn on the PS3 with the controller. The console had to be in the standby mode, which was standard so long as the switch was set to on at the back of the console.
    One final point though:
    _"I bought every Playstation Ever."_
*PSP and PSV cry in the corner*
Those were pretty impressive little machines that blasted their competition (DS/3DS) out of their water both graphically and in terms of sound and just plain looked more premium. How good the games were was of course up to the developers, and the DS/3DS both had dual screens as features, and the 3DS had the 3D functionality (that a lot of people didn't use anyway). Pretty sure the original PSP is still well appreciated for its use as a portable emulation console to this day, even if Sony did do their best to make it much harder than they needed to for people to use it that way.
And that's discounting spinoffs, like the PS Go, and PSX (Which was a DVR & PS2 combo device) but let's not get carried away.

    • Crestofhonor 23
      Crestofhonor 23 महीने पहले

@JoshJLMG Productions technically that and the PS4 could do it. However high frame rate displays were not at all common during the mid to late 2000s. High frame rate displays didn’t really become popular til the early 2010 and even then they were only in PC monitors. This is why games never went past it. TVs were locked to 50/60hz during this time mostly as a hangover from the early analog days of TV sets with CRTs. Most TVs stick to 60hz because it was the long established standard for how often the image would update. So once the PS4 came out they could have easily updated it to support 120hz but they never did even though hdmi 1.4 could do 1080p 120hz. Now that more TVs are coming out with proper high frame rate support, the console developers are now realizing the benefits of high frame rates and allowing the consoles to output it. Technically even the Dreamcast could of done high frame rates using its VGA connection to a CRT monitor since PC CRTs weren’t locked to 60hz unlike their TV counter parts. However not all PC monitors had the same capabilities so trying to get 90 or even up to 160hz at 480p would highly variable based on how old and how high end your CRT monitor was

There's a HUGE point which was missed in this video and this previous post about the PS2 being a DVD player: this is the price point. A common strategy in the console industry is for companies to take a hit on consoles and make it back-up with consumers over their lifetime via software sale. However, in the companies making movies (aka software) were not in the hardware industry (aka hardware.)
This positioned the PS2 as anywhere from 30%~60% cheaper than all the name brand electronics company's stand-alone DVD players. If you were an adult at that time in the market for a new entertainment setup... a lot of sales people would sell you on an expensive TV (as the markup and therefore commission was huge for them) and then recommend the PS2 as a "extremely affortable DVD player with optional remote purchase".
I was witness to this a lot in electronic shops during the timeframe. Owning a PS2 close to launch meant you were an EARLY adopter for DVD's.
This repeated again with the PS3. With the Blu-Ray player functionality, it meant that more people on average owned a Blu-Ray player instead of the rival medium of HD-DVD (a format which lost that war solely citing the PS3 as the reason for that loss.)

One thing you forgot to mention regarding the Playstation 2 - is that a lot of people bought it because it could run DVDs! Yes! Actual movies! To him it was old trash, to me it was a treasure. Then I managed to get my rich uncle to get me a NES, I was his favorite nephew so I used it to my advantage.
I had a friend and a cousin with SNES. No need to say that I became I frequent visitor in their houses until I got a used one for cheap with a few games. The only one my parents actually were convinced to buy due to finding it very cheap.
I bought my PS1 with my own money that saved very meticulously since I was a teen and could make some money here or there. PS2 was easy to get. Since I was now working and making money. And then they increased the price of the PS5 by $50 usd in most markets, they’ve made it downright impossible to purchase the console at any retailers. Sony’s answer to Xbox Game Pass is lackluster to say the least. Sony has also aggressively pushed the standard game retail price to $70. They’re latest release is a remake of a game that was already remade in 2019 . Gran Turismo 7’s launch has been a complete disaster filled with controversy. And Jim Ryan won’t keep his god damn mouth shut. Sony is really fucking up lately and it’s gonna bite them in the ass.

The backwards compatibility is the only thing that sucks about PS. The newest Xbox can still play original Xbox games for crying out loud.

The inflation is affecting them, why'd you think they would increase prices? They have employees to feed and don't forget about the people at the top

Gotta admit, this is probably my favourite video. I love the side-by-side comparison of how PlayStation has evolved.

I feel like there's a lot wrong with this video that I should be able to nitpick, if not for my awful memory. I will say that Sega's decline was very much not the direct result of Sony's PS1, and the Dreamcast had online games before the PS2 even released.
